Asking an SEO company in Sydney if paying for SEO is worth it is like asking Coca Cola if carbonated drinks are good for your health.

We get that you may be frowning a bit now reading what we just wrote. There’s just no way Australian Internet Advertising is going to badmouth SEO companies. But, hear us out.

We’ve been in the business for a while, and we have first-hand knowledge on how the world of SEO works. And a big part of our business model includes this blog, where we take a crack at some of the most pressing issues of digital marketing. And we’re doing it now too.

So, back to the topic. Do you need an SEO agency by your side to help you dominate organic search results? Or can you do it by yourself?

A Straightforward Answer

No, you don’t necessarily need an SEO agency. It’s not mandatory. There are plenty of SEO tactics you can employ in-house, without having to bring in extra help. But don’t get too happy about that prospect yet.

SEO is virtually an ongoing process, and you have to work on it constantly if you want consistent results. Your small business will always have new goals over time, and with them, your SEO goals will change too.

Moreover, you’ll always have to keep updated on the many changes regarding search engine optimisation algorithms. Google and other SEs (Search Engines) continuously improve their services to offer users the best possible services. And any change in algorithms shifts the way you do SEO. If you know about these modifications, you can adjust. If you don’t,  your efforts are in vain.

So, you can forgo hiring an SEO agency if:

  • You have an in-house team exclusively dedicated to it;
  • They continuously work on your website SEO;
  • They remain in the know about any changes in the industry.

If, however, you don’t meet these requirements, you might be better off with the help of an agency. But don’t rush into paying for SEO just yet. Not all companies are the same, however identical they may seem on paper.

Here’s what you should know about how SEO agencies are trying to sell themselves.

  1. Increasing SERP Rank Will Solve All Your Problems.

One thing a lot of agencies like to talk about when it comes to SEO is the page rank. So much so, that you’d think it’s the primary reason why you’re not a billionaire yet.

We’ve even had clients who thought we should focus on improving their website’s rank as a way to increase sales. But it’s not really how it works. Yes, a better position can increase traffic to a site, but converting those extra visitors is a different thing altogether.

Increasing your conversion rate is more dependant on things like mobile accessibility or intuitive navigation than SERP ranking.

  1. Keywords Are Essential, and You Can Do Nothing Without Them

A few years ago, keywords had a lot to say about a website’s position in Google search. Today, that’s not exactly the case anymore. Keywords are only useful when used together with several other SEO tactics.

Never trust any agency that goes on and on about the power of a well-chosen keyword. Their benefits are mild at best, and only if you’re doing everything else right.

  1. They Have One Strategy They Present All Clients

SEO is a complicated thing, and good SEO needs to be specifically designed for the needs of your website.

No two businesses are the same, so it only makes sense that each of their SEO strategies should differ as well. If, however, you meet with an SEO agency and they present a magical formula they say always works, be a bit wary of them. A good agency should first take a look at your website and analyze it. The SEO strategy will go on from there.

Moreover, do your research into the SEO agency. What rank do they have, and what are former customers saying about them? Also, how does their website look and act? Since they’re claiming to be SEO experts, they should also have a great site, right?

So, What Should You Do?

Paying for SEO is only worth it if you get a return on your investment (obviously), but the only way to make sure that happens is by having an open and sincere conversation with the agency.

You should meet with the company and ask them for some recommendations long before you sign any contract. Check out what their plans are for your business, and see if it’s the direction you want to follow. Prepare a list of questions and go to that initial meeting ready. Price is also an essential decisional factor, so make sure to get their rates upfront.
