With a massive audience, Facebook gives businesses great opportunities to connect with their prospective customers. Unfortunately, things aren’t as easy as they used to be.
The average reach for a Facebook post was down by 2.2% at the end of 2019, meaning that only a small fraction of your audience would see your posts.
But, what if not even your Facebook ads are getting you the results you were hoping for? You’ve already tried most of the tips out there to get to your targeted audience, such as tweaking your copy or optimising your images but without any real success.
But, have you tried integrating your Facebook ads with your existing contact list?
Think about it this way: social media advertising is not exactly cheap, so you want to make sure that you show your ads to the group of people most likely to click on them and take action. If you are a small business located in Sydney, then you may want to use Facebook’s targeting options to put your ads in front of a local audience who is most likely to engage with your Facebook advertisement.
You can also target people who have engaged with you already and you know for sure that they are interested in your products and services.
Without further ado, here’s how to target Facebook ads based on contact information, specifically email or phone number.

How to Target Facebook Ads Based on Email or Phone
You probably already have an existing list of emails and phone numbers from the customers who’ve engaged with you so far. If you have them stored in a CRM, then you can import this list of emails and phone numbers to Facebook. And, because most Facebook users have a registered email address or phone number, the social media giant can match your list with the details in its database.
Here’s how to import contacts to your Facebook Ads Manager.
You can create a custom audience by uploading a CSV file with your list of phone numbers or email addresses. Select the target by the “Email address” option, for example, in your Facebook Ads Manager and then copy and paste your email list.
From here on, you can use this custom audience to target your ads or create a lookalike audience to reach new people who have shown a specific interest in your business. To create a lookalike audience, you need to select the “Target Similar People” option and the Facebook Ads Manager will generate an audience similar to the one you have already importer.
What If I Don’t Have a Contact List?
That is a very good question!
If you are a small business that is just now building its audiences, targeting people by phone numbers or email addresses might not be an option for you right now.
Even if Facebook provides lots of targeting options, building your contact list (phone and emails) can benefit your business in various ways.
Email marketing, for example, allows you to build an intimate connection with your audience. Emails are also more targeted, so you can send them to the group of people most interested in your offer and most likely to take action.
As far as Facebook advertising goes, list targeting can increase your conversion rate significantly. One company found that by targeting their Facebook ads by emails, their conversion rate increased by 40%. Moreover, they were paying 30% less in customer acquisition.
So, if you don’t have a contact list yet, then it’s time to start building one. You could, for example:
- Include opt-ins on your website. Make the form as simple as possible and only include basic contact information like name and email address. The more information a user has to provide, the slimmer the chances that they will subscribe.
- Create a scroll pop-up that appears after a user has scrolled a certain percentage down a page on your website. Use this opportunity to ask them to subscribe to your email list or give you their phone number for more personalised offers.
- Create a social media contest and offer an incentive in return for your target audience’s email address.
